L'identite d'Antigone de Caryste a fait couler beaucoup d'encre et le debat est loin d'etre clos. En effet nombreux sont les textes que la tradition nous a transmise sous le nom d'Antigone de Caryste et il est a peu pres etabli aujourd'hui qu'ils ne sont pas le fait d'un seul et meme auteur. Restent les textes, notamment les Biographies qui relatent les vies des philosophes contemporains d'Antigone, tels Pyrrhon, Crantor ou Zenon. Ces courtes notices eurent une grande influence dans l'Antiquite, particulierement sur Philodeme, Aristocles, Athenee et Diogene Laerce.
